History

In July 1964, at a meeting of the Immaculate Conception Discussion Club, the idea of establishing a parish in Mooresville was born. Monsignor Goossens of the Mission Office was appointed to meet with the people and with a $25,000 gift from the Home Mission Office and a pledge of $70,000 from St. Michael's Parish in Indianapolis, under the guidance of Monsignor Kavanaugh, the property was purchased and building was started.

The Catholic women of Mooresville and surrounding area, under the direction of Monsignor Goossens, started the Women's Altar Society in February, 1966, to help with the work of forming the new parish. The group has continued its work to this day, under different names, now the St. Thomas More Women's Club.

In September 1966, CCD instructions were begun for the children at the American Legion Hall. Currently over 300 students attend Faith Formation Classes.

Ground was broken for the new church in January 1967, and Herman Briggeman was named first pastor in May 1967. The first Mass was celebrated in the Social Hall on July 16, 1967 and Mass was first celebrated in the Church on September 11, 1967. Archbishop Paul Schulte dedicated the new building on November 26, 1967.

Briggeman was also a builder, not only helping to finish the original church, but also building the pipe organ which was completed in the spring of 1970.

The first Parish Council was organized in 1968, reflecting the then recent changes set forth by the Second Vatican Council, which modernized the rituals and administration of the Catholic Church. The Pastoral Council continues to serve.

Father James Moriarity was the second pastor, serving from July 1971 to July 1972. During his tenure, the parking lot was paved and plans made for a rectory to house the priest, replacing a house trailer that had been parked north of the church.

The rectory was completed during the pastorate of Father Bernard Head who served from July 1972 to July 1974. Father Lawrence Voelker was pastor from July 1974 until 1976 and was succeeded by Father Paul Landwerlen.

Father Paul was instrumental in helping start the Knights of Columbus locally and in building classrooms and a large gymnasium to the west of the church.

Father Robert Kolentus was pastor from July 1982 to 1984, helping establish the Pro-Life group, reflecting the Church's opposition to abortion. Father Joseph Mader arrived in 1984 and the most recent addition of classrooms was completed in the fall of that year.

Father Edward Ripperger arrived in 1988 and served STM until his retirement in 2000. The parish experienced a period of major growth during this time, with over 600 families registered in the parish at the time of his retirement. Projects during these twelve years included: a major renovation of the church and facilities, further developed landscaping, several expansions and resurfacing of the parking lot, and the purchase of ten acres behind the church.

Father Richard Eldred was assigned as administrator of St. Thomas More parish February 1, 2001. He was born August 24, 1949 and ordained June 5, 1999. He served as associate pastor at Holy Family, St. Andrew and St. Mary parishes in Richmond, Indiana during 2000, and was associate pastor at St. Barnabas, Indianapolis, Indiana in 2000.

ST. THOMAS MORE (1478-1535)   His belief that no lay ruler has jurisdiction over the Church of Christ caused him to be beheaded because he refused to approve Henry VIII's divorce and remarriage. He was a scholar, chancellor, lawyer, father and gentleman. One of his most well known prayers is: Pray for me as I will for thee that we may merrily meet in heaven.
